Absent mountains
Influenced by the landscape surrounding my hometown (Tehran, Iran), my works use multiple textures that suggest mountainous forms. The mountains surrounding my hometown are absent here, I make them with different fabrics, stitches, and threads to create landscapes informed by my personal narratives. In order to convey the sense of infinity and the placelessness of nature, I do not limit shapes and lines.
By relying on the accumulation of patterned shapes, rather than a perceived depth to convey mass and space, I show the hidden layers of the mountains. As a woman living in a society where women are suppressed, I believe these layers are similar to women's inner experiences. “The layers” result from centuries of tolerated pressure, and mountains for me are the most prominent examples of this process of tolerance, power, and resistance.
